Funny Facebook Status Update

August20

Adrienne is on a roll looking up stupid state laws and posting them as her status update. Here’s her latest:
I had a request for stupid Georgia laws…I found one (well, actually several) –It is against the law to tie a giraffe to a telephone pole or street lamp. (Atlanta)

Now You’ve Got a Louisville Slugger on Your Team

August20

I once got a Very Important Job with a Big Broadcast Company. They were moving me from little ‘ol Louisville, Kentucky, to a much bigger market. I was thrilled and thought I’d thank the boss with a cool gift. I got him a personalized Louisville Slugger baseball bat with a note that said “Now You’ve Got a Louisville Slugger on Your Team.”

allstar_08_new

In retrospect, the note was obnoxious but the gift was cool. I’ve since bought the junior sized ones for baseball-loving nephews (with their names on the barrel). It’s a great gift for the sports guys in your life, and I like it as a corporate gift, too.

Cutest Baby Boy Clothes (Zutano) – 50% off

August20

Zutano’s on sale, y’all! Go to BabySuperMall and get 50% off. Don’t know about Zutano? Here’s the back story on my love affair with this brand:

My husband and I hate baby blue. We are allergic to boys’ clothes with dogs, cars or trucks. I think we gave away at least six baby blue teddy bears that were given to us as gifts. So buying clothes for a baby boy has been a challenge. It’s also become something of an obsession for me. If you find yourself in the same situation, I have one word for you: Zutano. Check out their website or Facebook fan page.

Zutano is a line of children’s clothing created up in Vermont by a husband/wife team. The wife is a graphic designer and comes up with the most delightful prints. Big, bold, colorful and fun. Twice a year, they release a new set of prints that all coordinate with one another. It’s like Garanimals, only much, much cooler.

I can’t buy enough of them. And since my not-so-little munchkin keeps doubling his weight on me, I have to keep buying the next size up (sometimes before he even gets a chance to wear the current size). Alas, Zutano does not sell their baby line on their website (they do sell their ItzyBitzy line on their site). Here’s my two cents on where to buy them:

  • 50% off all Zutano right now at BabySuperMall
  • Nicest customer service, good selection, but doesn’t have the most recent prints: Bambino Mountain. (Navigation is also a bit clunky but prices are good.)
  • Best selection: ComfyKids.
  • You can also find them at local children’s boutiques. Search Zutano’s site for a store near you.

Some of my favorite prints: Elephant Parade (mixes great with chocolate stripes and chocolate dot, orange, brown or pool solids); Bugs (out of print but I still find it occasionally); Cabana Stripe; and Celery Dot.

OK, how sick is this? I actually have all the prints memorized. They make cute stuff for girls, too. LOVE their new owls print for girls. The cotton is soft and washes well. If you have a friend who delivers early, they have a great line for preemies called Itzy Bitzy. Their cotton booties stay on way better than any socks I’ve found.

If you decide to buy some and want help with sizes, shoot me an email and I’ll be happy to tell you what I’ve learned about how the sizes run.

What to Do With Poopy Diapers So They Don’t Smell — This Really Works!

August19

I have to give credit to my engineering husband for this one. When my son had a really bad stomach virus, we used gloves to change those nasty, poop-all-over-the-place, god-awful diapers. Had gloves left over so we kept using them on the poopy diapers. You know how you take the gloves off by rolling them back off your hand so they’re inside out? Next time, just roll them inside out and OVER the closed up diaper. Take your other glove and do the other half of the diaper if it doesn’t all fit in one glove.

I swear those gloves form a tight bag that does NOT let the stink out. I would post pics but ewww, that’s just gross.

This totally works for us! For more tips, check out all the great Works for Me Wednesday ideas over at WeAreThatFamily.

Great Gift for a 2-4 Year Old

August18

These custom books from I See Me are the best gift for a young kid ever. The book spells out your child’s name, one page at a time. And each letter corresponds to a fantastic animal or fairy (you pick the theme) that teaches your child and inspires their little imaginations.

I’ve bought these for a niece and nephew and they were big hits with both. They also sell personalized plates, artwork, puzzles and more with the same animals or fairies. I bought the fairy plate for my niece and she loved it. (Of course, it went great with the personalized fairy book I’d bought her the year before.)

Tech Tuesday – Use BankRate to Find Best Interest Rates

August18

Looking for a mortgage loan? Or maybe you want to put your savings in a CD? You can quickly search for the best interest rates at BankRate.com. I first used it when my husband and I were engaged and planning our wedding. We opened our first joint checking account together and I wondered if there were any that paid interest. I went on BankRate.com, found a checking account that did pay interest (with no minimum balance) and so began our financial tethering. While we were setting up that account, I noticed that the bank offered an equity line that was one point MINUS prime; my husband had been paying the standard one point PLUS prime. So we switched that over, too, while we were at it.

Great, useful site. We’ll be using it again soon as we search for the best mortgage rate (if we’re able to sell our house). Fingers crossed!

What Type of Blog Is This Anyway?

August17

I work in marketing so I know the value of creating a niche. I set out to write a mommy blog but there are thousands and frankly, most of them are better than mine! I mean, who are we kidding? I’ve only been a mom for a few months. I thought about writing a gift blog because people are often contacting me for gift advice. But again, there are people who do that way better than I could. Who has time to shop with a newborn?

So what I decided to do instead was write a blog about whatever happens to catch my eye at the time. Most of the women I know are famous multi-taskers so I figure most of you know what it’s like to flip from fashion to decorating to figuring out what to do for the kids’ birthday parties. And juggle work, and a marriage and a household, all while never missing an episode of American Idol or So You Think You Can Dance (thanks to the magic of DVR technology).

Welcome to my mommy, er, gift, er decorating, er pop culture blog. It’s random. I hope you’ll comment and enjoy!

One other note: we are currently not accepting advertising and do not do sponsored posts. EVERYTHING I review is something I’ve tried personally, know someone who has tried, or have thought about trying. (Meaning, it’s on my list of things to buy!) If I ever do a sponsored review, you will know it, and I’ll tell you exactly what I think of it.

New Mommy Monday

August17

We’re going to start an occasional feature around here, born out of a conversation I had at lunch yesterday with my friend, Kate. Kate’s in her third trimester with her second, but it’s been a while since she had her first and she says she can’t remember much about the infant years. Plus, all the gear options and recommendations have changed so much!

So I found myself in the unexpected position of being full of random information that was actually useful! I never expected I would know stuff that someone who isn’t a new mom wouldn’t know. But there I was, prattling about the easiest-to-clean high chair (the Boon), which stroller I’d get if I had it to do over again (the Bugaboo Frog or The Bob Revolution), and how the beautiful necklace she was wearing reminded me of Mommy Necklaces.

“Did you write a blog post about that,” she asked? Not yet. But I will now. And most Mondays. All about the gear, the stuff, the “new” advice (infants should be in a rear-facing car seat until 2 years old now) for new moms or moms like Kate. Kate, by the way, is one of those beautiful pregnant women who hasn’t gained a pound anywhere except her belly. And yet, I don’t hate her.

Plus, Kate is going to tell me all about the early school years, and how to handle boys and video games, a subject I have a feeling will come up in our household in a few years. I’ll share her tips with you all, too.

Friday Random Rodeo

August14

Just saw this at TheJumpOff and CRACKED up. Renee continues to crank out awesome “upcycled” clothes made from used t-shirts. How funny is this onesie?

Saw this GORGEOUS aqua and orange Moroccan-inspired party idea at Hostess with the Mostest (love her site y’all!). This makes me want to have a grown-up party that involves cake even though I don’t like cake. I’ve also been thinking of doing my son’s room in orange and aqua if we move (trying to sell our house now) but my husband can’t get past thinking “Miami Dolphin colors” and I guess he thinks that’s a bad thing. I dunno. I love it and all things orange lately.

And check out the Back-to-School Guide over at Cool Mom Picks. So many great ideas and they’ve secured LOTS of discounts for you. Discount codes galore. Oh happy day! Or Oh Happy Weekend cuz I will totally be clicking up a storm. I have a nephew and niece who both have big “firsts” (first day of kindergarten; first day of first grade) and those backpacks are tempting. . .

How Random Is This? Jack White + Loretta Lynn

August13

This is a totally random pairing: Jack White of the White Stripes (and a new band called Dowhater, heehee) with Loretta Lynn performing “Portland, Oregon” together. “One more drink and a pitcher to go-oh-oh . . .” Trust me, it’s cool. And thanks to my friend, Stephanie for putting it on Facebook this morning and totally distracting me from work!
